If walls could talk, Hubbard Chapel’s would have one heck of a story to tell. Actually, scratch that — they’d have about 130 years worth of stories. Births, baptisms, community gatherings, funerals, and of course, countless weddings. All of it happened right here, in this beautiful little corner of Hubbard, Oregon.
But let’s start at the very beginning. (It’s a very good place to start.)
The Early Days: 1847 — A Town is Born
The story of Hubbard Chapel is really the story of Hubbard itself. In 1847, a man named Charles Hubbard Jr. arrived in the Willamette Valley, settling on the edge of French Prairie among the oaks and firs. A town slowly grew up around his name — and what a town it became.
By 1877, there were 150 people and a railroad. By 1881, 15 businesses. Oregon had already joined the Union as the 33rd state (on Valentine’s Day, 1859 — because of course it did). And in 1876, the first Methodist Church was established, planting the first seed of what would eventually become Hubbard Chapel.
✦ Fun History Fact
Oregon became a state on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1859. We like to think that’s a pretty fitting start for a state that would one day be home to one of the most beloved wedding chapels in the Willamette Valley.
1892: The Chapel is Born
In August of 1892, members of the First Congregational Church of Hubbard officially decided to build their church. The minutes from that meeting — an actual piece of history you can still read today — show a community excited and determined to create something lasting.
By 1894, the chapel was dedicated. It was a proud moment for a proud little town. The first minister’s salary? A grand total of $100. (The love of the community was priceless, naturally.)
A Legendary Love Story — Already
Here’s one of our favorite pieces of Hubbard lore: one of the town’s founding figures, W.C. Hubbard, described his courtship and marriage with wonderful brevity: “I go to a dance and get married.” He attended a dance at Parkersville, it ran until daylight, and then he and Helen M. Cooley walked straight across to the Congregational parsonage and got married on the spot.
Spontaneous. Romantic. Completely Oregonian. We love them.
From Pioneer Church to Award-Winning Venue
Over the decades, the chapel served its community faithfully — through two World Wars, the Great Depression, and more change than any of its founders could have imagined. When it eventually transitioned into its current role as a wedding venue and community center, it brought everything that made it special into the new chapter: the historic architecture, the warmth, the sense of occasion.
Today, Hubbard Chapel has been voted Best Wedding Venue in the Willamette Valley four years running by Salem’s Statesman Journal — and Best of the Mid-Valley in 2020. Not bad for a 130-year-old church in a small Oregon town.
“The history of this place isn’t just a backdrop — it’s part of the ceremony itself. When you stand at that altar, you’re standing where generations of Hubbard’s community have stood. That means something.”— Hubbard Chapel team
And the best part? That history keeps growing, one wedding at a time. Your story could be the next one these walls hold.
