HUBBARD CHAPEL

Forever Stories

Forever Story: Donna & Ray — They Said “I Do” Here 40 Years Ago. Then They Came Back.

Some places hold onto love. Hubbard Chapel is one of them.

Donna remembers exactly what the light looked like. It was a Saturday afternoon in early October, and it was coming through the chapel’s tall windows at that particular autumn angle that turned everything gold. She was 24 years old, holding a bouquet of white chrysanthemums and yellow daisies that her mother had arranged the night before, and she was about to marry Ray.

“I remember thinking the chapel looked like something out of a painting,” she says. “It still does.”

Then: October 1983

Donna and Ray met at a barn dance — which, if you know anything about the Willamette Valley in the early 1980s, tells you everything you need to know about both of them. He asked her to dance three songs in a row and she thought, either this man is very confident or he has absolutely no idea what he’s doing. It turned out to be both, and she found it completely charming.

They married at Hubbard Chapel on a cool October afternoon with 87 guests, a potluck reception, and a wedding cake that Donna’s grandmother had baked from scratch. The ceremony was twenty minutes long. The dancing afterward lasted until well past midnight.

“It was simple,” Donna says. “But it was perfect. We didn’t have much money, and the chapel was affordable and beautiful and close to home. We felt like the luckiest people in the world.”

Now: October 2023

Forty years later, their kids planned a surprise. Their three adult children — all of whom, coincidentally, attended weddings at Hubbard Chapel themselves — arranged to bring Donna and Ray back to the chapel for their 40th anniversary. Same chapel. Same October light. Different decade, same love.

Ray wore his original wedding tie (it no longer reached his belt, but it still existed, which they considered remarkable). Donna wore a dress the same color as her original gown. Their seven grandchildren sat in the front pew.

“He looked at me the same way he looked at me when I was 24. The chapel looked the same. The light was the same. It was like walking back into the most important day of my life and finding it completely intact.”— Donna, Hubbard Chapel bride — twice

What 40 Years Looks Like

We asked Donna and Ray their secret. Ray said, without hesitation, “She’s always right and I’ve learned to say so faster.” Donna laughed and said, “He thinks he’s funny. That’s actually the real answer — marry someone who makes you laugh every single day.”

They also said this: find a place to get married that means something. A place with history, with warmth, with walls that feel like they’re rooting for you. “We knew the minute we walked into Hubbard Chapel,” Donna says. “We just knew.”

Forty years later, they still know.
