José proposed to Mia on a Tuesday morning before work. He’d been carrying the ring in his coat pocket for three weeks, waiting for “the right moment,” until Mia spilled coffee on both of them and he thought: this is exactly the right moment. This is us. He got down on one knee on their kitchen floor, still in his work clothes, coffee all over his shirt, and asked her to marry him.
She said yes before he finished the sentence.
The Plan
They’d both watched one too many engagements become two-year planning marathons that left the couple exhausted before the wedding even happened. They wanted something different. They wanted something fun.
So they came up with a plan: tell everyone they were throwing José’s mom a surprise 70th birthday party at Hubbard Chapel. Get all their favorite people in one room. And then — surprise — get married instead.
“The look on people’s faces was worth every second of the planning,” Mia says, still delighted by the memory two years later.
The (Elaborate, Perfect) Setup
They booked Hubbard Chapel months in advance. They had the invitations printed as birthday party invitations — complete with a photo of José’s mom and “Celebrate Rosalinda!” across the top. They enlisted exactly three co-conspirators: Mia’s sister (maid of honor), José’s best friend (best man), and the officiant, who drove up from Portland and spent the entire cocktail hour pretending to be just another guest.
José’s mom, Rosalinda, was told she was going to a “planning meeting” to discuss her own party. She walked into the chapel to find 45 of her closest family members already assembled and her son standing at the altar in a suit.
“She started crying before she understood what was happening,” José says. “And then she understood, and she cried harder.”

The Ceremony
When the officiant called everyone to attention and explained what was actually happening, the room erupted. People gasped. People laughed. Rosalinda made a speech — completely unrehearsed, entirely beautiful — that nobody could hear over all the crying.
Mia’s sister walked her down the aisle to a song playing from someone’s Bluetooth speaker. José’s best friend had the rings. The ceremony was eighteen minutes long and contained exactly one joke (from the officiant), four laughs (from the crowd), and about eleven collective rounds of tears.
The Party
Here’s the thing about surprise weddings: your guests are already in a state of pure joy when the reception starts. No awkward cocktail hour small talk, no polite waiting around — everyone was already electric with delight. The Hubbard Chapel community center was decorated with birthday banners that now read as the best inside joke in family history.
They danced until the venue closed. Rosalinda danced more than anyone.
“We wanted our wedding to feel like a party,” Mia says. “But it turned into something even better — it felt like a gift. Like we gave everyone we love the best surprise of their lives. And it happened in this beautiful, historic place that will always mean something specific to us.”
